Carpenter Technology Corporation (NYSE: CRS) is a manufacturer and distributor of specialty alloys, including stainless steel and titanium, and various engineered products made from metallic and ceramic materials. The company was founded by James H. Carpenter on June 7, 1889 in Reading, Pennsylvania as the Carpenter Steel Company. The company, a product of Carpenter's ideas to improve steel manufacturing, began when Carpenter and a group of investors leased commercial space in old Philadelphia and a rail mill in Reading. Their first order, 3,000 tons of steel, was placed 11 weeks after the founding of the company. In 1937 the company went public and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. In the mid-1990s the company expanded to include the production of vacuum-melted specialty alloys. This $500 million dollar expansion led to the acquisition of companies that dealt with made-to print components, increased steel manufacturing. During this time the company started producing components that were in great demand by the aerospace, medical and consumer goods industries. (via Wikipedia)
